Fort Bazaar

Galle, Sri Lanka

Crisp white elegance

The Fort Bazaar is set amidst ageing coral walls on historic Church Street – an atmospheric central thoroughfare within the historic walls of Galle Fort.

Recognized by UNESCO for its cultural heritage value, the Fort was declared a World Heritage Site in 1988 due to its unique European architecture and South Asian culture dating back to the 16th century. Today it remains a charming area of Dutch influence, narrow streets, cafes and boutiques.

The hotel offers 18 stylish rooms and suites, all with ensuite bathrooms. The fifteen ‘Bazaar’ and ‘Banyan’ bedrooms open onto a central courtyard flanked by cushioned alfresco seating and the three incredibly spacious ‘Upper Suites’ boast balconies with views over the fort’s red-tiled rooftops.  Throughout the décor is fresh and contemporary with chic understated interiors and a distinctly Middle Eastern feel.

A vibrant restaurant serves a delicious menu which reflects the fort’s Moorish history while the luxurious ‘Z Spa’ offers a range of indulgent treatments and massages—the perfect way to relax after a day of sightseeing.

Galle is famed for its pretty winding streets, history as a trading post, Dutch-colonial buildings and sweeping sandy beaches. It comes alive during the Galle Literary festival or when the test cricket is in town and remains a vibrant but wonderfully relaxed city to explore on foot year-round.

The Fort Bazaar is a fabulous base from which to discover ancient mosques, churches and grand mansions, browse design studios and art galleries, then stop for coffee in a stylish café to watch the world go by.
