Zambian tented classic
Tena Tena – meaning ‘temporary home’, enjoys a stunning new location on the banks of the Luangwa River in the remote Nsefu sector of the South Luangwa National Park. It is famous for its concentrations of plains game, especially huge herds of buffalo that move around in the area, which in turn attract predators. Tena Tena has been described as “altogether beyond superlatives and one of the best safari camps in the whole of Africa.”
Activities at Tena Tena centre on the abundance of this game and you have the option of morning, afternoon and night drives. There is also the opportunity to walk every day along the banks of the Luangwa and around the many oxbow lagoons which dot the area and attract stunning birds and an array of wildlife. These walks are led by knowledgeable guides, and are escorted by armed National Park scouts, giving you an informative insight into the bush at a level that will surprise you. For example, your guide will explain the skills of reading the bush, what animals passed by during the night, how the termites control the temperature in their huge mounds or where a noisy woodpecker is nesting.
The camp is earthy bush luxury at its best with the interiors of the four stylish and elegant tents reminiscent of Hemingway’s Africa. Each tent has been carefully positioned to incorporate a stunning view of the Luangwa River whilst ensuring maximum privacy in the rooms. Like the old Tena Tena, the rooms consist of a private veranda, dressing room, a large open air bathroom and outdoor shower.
There is also the opportunity to visit Kawaza Village – the local community supported by Robin Pope Safaris.
