The stunningly picturesque Thimphu Valley sits high in the Himalayas with views over the mesmerising Wang Chu river and boasts a pristine environment, spellbinding scenery and architecture, and warm, hospitable people. Taj Tashi is nestled in the heart of this valley providing a gateway to Bhutan’s mythical and deeply spiritual mountain landscape.
The hotel seamlessly blends Dzong architecture and modern design, and is adorned with classical Buddhist art pieces. Each of the 66 expansive rooms and suites – the smallest of which measure 450 square feet – boast sweeping views of the mountains and feature hand-painted murals of clouds in a traditional style. All enjoy high ceilings, dark-brown lacquered wood floors, wall-mounted mandalas, marble bathrooms with heated floors and cushioned daybeds from which to gaze out at the majestic Himalayas. A choice of four restaurants gives you the freedom to enjoy contemporary international cuisine or try local delicacies such as a milky river-weed soup and ema-datshi, the national dish of melted cheese with grated chilies. ‘Rimps’, a tea lounge with dramatic carved walls, serves a tasty salted butter tea typical of the region—a must try!
During your stay you might like to swim in the heated indoor pool, visit the gym or indulge in one of the many wellness treatments available at the Jiva spa. Early-morning risers may catch sight of the monk who chants prayers in the outdoor courtyard, which is also where traditional dancers perform most nights around the sunken fire pit.
