Winter Palace

Luxor, Egypt

Former haunt of Christie & Carter

The Sofitel Winter Palace is a 5-star luxury hotel on the banks of the river Nile in Luxor, set amidst ancient temples and tropical gardens. Built in 1886 by British explorers, archaeologist Howard Carter, discoverer of Tutankhamen’s tomb, wandered the gardens of this sumptuous hotel almost a century ago and Agatha Christie wrote her famed novel ‘Death on the Nile’ here in 1937.

Each of the 86 rooms and 6 suites captures the allure of the past, decorated in colonial style with fine wooden furniture, rich fabrics and a colour palate of crimson and gold. Choose either garden or Nile views and enjoy the breeze from your balcony or upgrade to a suite for real luxury and a team of personal butlers.

Strolling though the bougainvillea-lined gardens you will come across the Central Park bar, where you can sip champagne in the cool shade and afternoon tea is served daily beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Victorian Lounge. During the day, L’Oasis offers light poolside dishes and in the evening, the hotel’s historic 1886 restaurant serves a menu of French cuisine in the original crystal lit salon where royals and dignitaries were served.

To stay in the Winter Palace Luxor is to experience the Egypt of old in all its ancient splendour and colonial glamour.
