Kwitonda Lodge

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Regeneration & conservation

Singita Kwitonda Lodge borders Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda. Its establishment is part of an ambitious project to rehabilitate, reforest and maintain the biological integrity of 7000 acres of land and protect the species that inhabit it. Engulfed by green rainforest and bamboo groves, these ancient volcanoes are home to 33% of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Kwitonda takes its name from a great silverback gorilla who was known locally for his placidity and gentleness and was said to embody the spirit of Rwanda.

Built with sustainability as its fundamental focus, the lodge accommodates 8 suites and a 4 bedroom villa, Kataza House. A volcanic-rock pathway connects each suite and villa to the central lodge where guests can unwind in the lounge, or enjoy a glass of wine from Kwitonda’s very own wine cellar by the outdoor fire-pit. Each private suite offers indoor and outdoor living, a heated plunge pool, mini-bar, a covered veranda, a dressing room and an area dedicated to spa treatments.

The location of Kwitonda Lodge puts gorilla trekking within easy reach, and daily hikes to observe gorilla groups in their natural habitat are led by expert guides. Other activities include golden monkey trekking, a visit to a local village and a trip to Rwanda’s capital, Kigali. While gorilla trekking is only available to those over the age of 15 years, children will enjoy arts and crafts, cooking classes with local chefs and the tree nursery. Once the hiking and exploring is done,  tuck in to farm-to-table dining or indulge in one of the many spa treatments on offer.

The lodge puts regeneration and conservation at its core whilst offering serene surroundings, outstanding service, and the opportunity to encounter one of the world’s most magnificent animals in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
