San Camp is located on a private concession amid the desert and moonscapes of the Makgadikgadi pans. A relic of one of the world’s largest super-lakes, formed some five million years ago, the lake dried up over 2,000 years ago to leave what are now considered the largest salt pans in the world.
San Camp is a small camp of palm trees and elegant white Ottoman style tents that overlook the ethereal vastness of the Kalahari Desert. Accommodating just twelve guests it follows the classic 1920’s safari set up – think Persian rugs, cool cotton sheets and mahogany furniture in striking contrast with the ruggedness emptiness of the surrounding wilderness. Each of the tents is luxuriously furnished and each enjoys a private en suite bathroom with hot running water, polished copper basins and flush toilets. A private verandah is the perfect spot to watch the sun set, as the camp is softly lit by lanterns.
Activities are led by qualified zoologists/biologists who will explain the fascinating adaptations of unique desert wildlife to the area and you may have the opportunity to interact with a group of wild but habituated meerkats. You will also have the opportunity to walk with Bushmen trackers who provide a unique connection between their fascinating culture and the natural environment or venture into the impenetrable salt pans on 4WD quad bikes and explore remote archaeological sites.
For those wanting a truly unique safari experience San Camp is stylishly eccentric, romantic and remote – the last bastion of civilisation!
