Temple and staff at Ralwa Narlai Heritage Hotel in Rajasthan

Rawla Narlai

Narlai, India

A gem in rural Rajasthan

Located mid-way between Udaipur and Jodhpur in the heart of the Aravalli Hills, Narlai is the ideal spot to break your journey and enjoy rural Rajasthan.

This 17th century property was once a favourite hunting lodge of the Jodhpur Royal Family and offers 26 rooms, suites and tents.  No two are identical and they are scattered around this rambling heritage hotel, reached through narrow corridors and up steep staircases that open on to shared terraces and roof-tops.

Rising behind the hotel is an enormous granite mound with temples built into the rock and topped by a stone elephant.  The views over the surrounding landscape and village are well worth the trek, and the hotel pool and courtyard, blooming with frangipani and brilliant pink bougainvillea, are the perfect place to cool off after your climb.

There are leopards in the surrounding hills and jeep safaris are on offer, although sightings are few and far between.  There are horses available to ride and a wander through the local village is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the rural Rajasthan lifestyle.

A real highlight whilst staying at Rawla Narlai is the ‘Stepwell Dinner’. Travel by ambling bullock cart to an elaborate 6th century well outside the village where you will dine by candle light to the accompaniment of traditional songs.
