Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, lying in the east of the country, is renowned for its spectacular and abundant big cat sightings. Leopard and lion can be all but guaranteed, so much so that its Hollywood pride was featured on the Discovery Channel’s Big Cat Diaries.
Puku Ridge is located about two hours from Mfuwe domestic airport in a secluded region rarely frequented by day visitors or guests at other camps and lodges within the South Luangwa. Puku Ridge overlooks the Luangwa floodplains that, in the drier months, are lush grasslands teeming with zebra, buffalo and the puku from which the lodge gains its name.
Each of Puku Ridge’s eight luxury safari tents are set on an elevated ridge overlooking plain and woodlands, full of wildlife. Superbly appointed, each expansive suite features sumptuous king or twin beds, an indulgent bathroom and a private balcony with a refreshing plunge pool overlooking the plains. An enclosed winding staircase leads from the main area to a rooftop sleep-out that can be prepared upon request for a magical night under the stars.
Game drives explore the wildlife-rich bushlands and winter thorn and sausage tree woodlands, and rewarding excursions will uncover numerous elephant families, pods of hippos in the Luangwa River, several resident lion prides and lone leopards waiting in the tree branches for unsuspecting gazelles to pass below. Several wild dog packs are also known to pass through the region, though are never a guaranteed sighting.
