Mandrare River Camp

Madagascar

Spiny forest lunar landscape

Three hours drive north west of Fort Dauphin, in southern Madagascar, Mandrare River Camp is a unique tented camp that provides excellent access to the ‘Spiny Forest’ – home to an abundance of wildlife and the fascinating Antandroy tribe that inhabits this arid landscape.

Mandrare River Camp is set in the grounds of an old colonial plantation house opposite the sacred ancestral forests of the Antandroy Tribe. Located on the banks of the Mandrare River and shaded by tamarind trees, the seven simple, yet stylish, safari tents are fully equipped with ornate, handcrafted furniture, 4-poster beds and en-suite bathroom with bucket showers that can be filled on request. All tents have a verandah overlooking the river and there’s a terrace right on the river’s edge where you can relax in the middle of the day, sit with some binoculars enjoying the fantastic bird watching and dine on the finest Malagasy produce with a French twist.

Day and night walks will allow you to explore the forests in detail & experienced guides will share their knowledge of the Spiny Forest’s unique flora and fauna  – including four different species of lemur and an exceptional array of birdlife.  Enjoy visits to the sisal plantation, the 70ft dunes of Lac Anony and walk in the sacred Ifotaka Community forest, accompanied by members of the Antandroy Tribe – the most unique and interesting tribe of Madagascar.

In an area so richly diverse and far removed from the western world, enjoy the opportunity to combine exotic wildlife and traditional culture at a unique location.
