Machaba Camp

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Tree of Life

Machaba Camp is a traditional style camp nestling in the game-rich Khwai area on the eastern tongue of the Okavango Delta. The Khwai Concession is a 35 000 hectare reserve which shares its westerly border with the Moremi Game Reserve.

The camp is built in the classic 1950’s style, with ten luxury safari tents separated by pathways that meander between the large riverine trees. All of the tents are situated on the beautiful Khwai River, overlooking the famous Moremi Game Reserve. From their verandas you can watch the daily parade of animals coming down to drink at the river in front of camp. The communal mess area is spacious but provides plenty of quiet nooks in which to read or relax. Facilities include a plunge pool, dedicated wifi zone (wifi has deliberately not been installed throughout the camp), a curio shop and a library.

‘Machaba’ is the local Setswana name for the Sycamore Fig Tree, the tree of life.  Machaba trees are renowned for their abundant fruit which feed a vast array of animals throughout the year including elephant, baboons, bush buck, green pigeons and many more. Activities aim to maximise wildlife encounters and you will enjoy games drives (both day and night), birding, walking and mokoro (dug out canoe) expeditions. Visits to local villages can be arranged and as a guest at Machaba you have an open invitation to meet the local villagers and witness what life in a remote part of Africa is like in a relaxed and authentic way.
