Barefoot Beach & Bush Luxury
Greystoke Camp sits on its own secluded beach on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in south-western Tanzania. The backdrop to this oasis is the wild and thickly forested Mahale Mountains, full of birds, butterflies and primates.
Access to the area is by charter plane to a remote bush strip and then by ’dhow’ down the lake shore passing the odd local fishing village. The camp sits on a crescent beach with 6 wood and thatch two-storey cottages tucked amongst a wild date palm grove on the edge of the forest line. The main area is a multi-level thatched building commanding views across the lake from the shore.
This is an exceptionally unspoilt wildlife sanctuary that has a stunningly beautiful lake location with white sandy beaches and clear fresh water. The mountains rise up behind camp with lush evergreen semi-tropical forest and around 1,000 wild-living chimpanzees. One of the largest group of chimps numbers about 80, although not always together, and is habituated to human contact.
There are no vehicles here so all explorations are on foot along the lake’s edge or along forest chimp-observation paths, and by boat onto the lake. Your mornings are spent tracking the chimpanzees, sitting quietly amongst them as they forage and rumble around you. The afternoons are spent relaxing by the lake, snorkeling to see the tropical freshwater fish, kayaking, fishing or soaking up the tranquility of the Mahales. In the evenings enjoy sundowner cruises or drinks at the camp bar and enjoy candlelit gourmet dinners laid out on the beach with the magnificent mountains as your backdrop.
