In the northern region of Ethiopia, right in the heart of historical Tigray, lies Gheralta Lodge. Thoughtfully and beautifully designed, the lodge has been built using local stone, wood and thatch, causing minimal interference with the rare natural beauty of its wild, rural surrounds.
Boasting extraordinary views of the unique chain of mountains that make up the Tigrayan landscape, Gheralta Lodge is located in an area that is well-known for its churches, ancient paintings and manuscripts, and of course its magnificent landscape which has barely changed since biblical times. It provides an ideal base for exploring the region’s rock-hewn churches, including the famous ‘chapel in the sky’, Abuna Yemata Guh, which teeters astonishingly on top of a rocky pinnacle. Birding and hiking in the mountains is also highly recommended.
The lodge features a small lounge area, an Italian-inspired restaurant and a variety of thoughtful touches including loungers on the veranda, top European wines and even a book swap facility. Gheralta’s five stone-built bungalows are simple in design yet suitably comfortable for a stay in this remote mountainous province.
