Elephants play fighting in the water at Hyena Pan in Botswana

Elephant Pan

Khwai Reserve, Botswana

Under the feet of elephants

Elephant Pan is a tranquil tented camp located in the sprawling Khwai Private Reserve. The reserve borders some of Botswana’s finest game viewing areas, with Moremi National Park to the south and Chobe National Park to the east. Once a hunting zone, this 200,000 hectare area is now fully dedicated to wildlife and conservation as a direct result of Elephant Pan’s carefully managed approach to eco-tourism.

Guests are accommodated in eight simple but comfortable tents which look directly over a watery lagoon. Opening your tent flaps in the morning you’ll see elephants trumpeting, splashing and snorting in the lily-filled waters below. Each tent is made of traditional canvas but enjoys warm timber flooring, stylish accents of colourful African fabric and en-suite bathrooms with full flush toilets.

The main mess area offers a rim-flow splash pool, casual lounge area and sun deck with uninterrupted views of the surrounding bush. The camp sits within a cathedral of mopane trees overlooking a natural pan, which provides a steady source of water for the area’s abundant wildlife and sitting in camp watching the resident hippo, elephant and buffalo is a fantastic way to spend a restful afternoon, gin and tonic in hand.

During your stay you can enjoy productive game drives, guided bush walking and night drives to spot the areas lesser known nocturnal creatures. The camp’s purpose-built hide is a real highlight. Sitting quietly hidden you can watch wildlife at close range for hours and this special vantage point provides some fantastic photographic opportunities. Where else could you capture such a unique ground-level perspective or a macro of an elephant’s foot?!

Elephant Pan offers an atmosphere of easy relaxation combined with an outstanding wildlife experience with the opportunity to see big game up close and unique encounters round every corner!
