Watch the sun set over the Delta at Duba Plains

Duba Plains

Okavango Delta, Botswana

A veritable Garden of Eden

Great Plains’ Duba Plains Camp sits in the heart of the Okavango Delta amidst a matrix of palm-dotted islands, flood plains and woodland typical of the region’s unique landscape. Since Great Plains Conservation is the only operator on the 77,000 acre private reserve, a stay here offers the ultimate opportunity for private wildlife sightings.

Duba Plains Camp offers 5 bespoke tents, in addition to a separate 2 bedroom suite aptly named the Duba Plains Suite, all designed to blend into the forest and to take advantage of the shapes and textures of the trees and their shade. All the rooms are raised on recycled railway sleeper decking and offer amazing views of the surrounding floodplain and the steady stream of wildlife parading past. A large lounge area provides plenty of space for writing or reading and a private verandah and plunge pool are perfect for afternoon rest and relaxation. The main area consists of a large raised dining room, and comfortable lounge with private dining areas, wine cellar and library. A media room is available for photographic work. An extended deck into the swamp under the giant ebony trees is the camp’s centre point.

Duba Plains prides itself on its wildlife experience  and guests can expect intimate sightings of lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo as well as several interesting Kalahari species like aardwolves and pangolins. Early morning and late afternoon/early evening game drives in an open 4×4 vehicle will facilitate excellent photographic opportunities and boat-based activities are also available when water levels permit.

Duba Plains is the place that the founders of Great Plains Conservation founders and National Geographic filmmakers, Dereck and Beverly Joubert, chose for their home base and it is easy to see why. With literally thousands of animals in an almost endless pattern across the flood plains, this is a veritable Garden of Eden.

ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT

Duba Plains Camp is a fully integrated community empowerment project on land leased directly from five local communities, who in turn receive all of the lease revenue. 80% of the staff at Duba Plains Camp come from these communities. All operations adhere to the highest  standards of responsible practice and environmental mitigation associated with driving in boggy substrate. Great Plains is committed to developing an ever-lighter footprint.
