Lone cheetah walking the plains of Katavi National Park at Chada Katavi

Chada Katavi

Katavi National Park, Tanzania

Classic Tented Camp in Remote Location

From the air, you have to look carefully to spot the Chada Katavi camp and you’ll find your eyes are immediately drawn more to the wide open spaces and less to the detail; that’s the promise of Katavi, total absorption into the natural world.

Chada Katavi is stylish and wonderfully comfortable, but all the resources here are shared with Katavi’s animals and so the camp’s footprint remains light. There are just six tents, raised up on wooden platforms on the edge of the Chada Plain. They have wide-open fronts and lots of shade-net windows to let in the passing breeze. The en-suite bathrooms have eco-flush loos and an urn of cool water to refresh yourself. Safari style bucket showers are the best thing here, tried and tested and there is no better way to wash off the Katavi dust than under one of these.

The game is everywhere in Katavi. So much so in fact, that you often don’t have to leave your tent veranda to see it. Elephant are frequent visitors, attracted to the same shady fruit trees as us, and vast herds of buffalo graze on the flood plain, sometimes right in front of camp.

Apart from game drives, one can take part in walking safaris which take you deeper into Katavi´s untamed world.Rare roan and sable antelope, normally skittish and shy, graze openly on these plains. On foot, you’ll experience another side of Africa, that would often take flight at the sound of an approaching vehicle. The game is unbelievable with sightings of elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, crocodiles and massive pods of hippo amongst many others.

In the drier months the hippo pools slowly dry up exposing the pods and making for some fantastic hippos experiences. The park is also full of buffalo and herds of 1,000 or more congregate in the months leading up to the rains. At the end of the day’s adventure of discovery, you return to the creature comforts of the camp mess and the welcoming fireside of Chada Katavi.

Chada Katavi Camp is one of Africa’s hidden treasures and remote, simple bush luxury at its best.

The remoteness at Chada Katavi means that game is everywhere!
