Macatoo Camp

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Splashing through the Delta on horseback

Splashing through sparkling flood plains and riding alongside giraffe or zebra is surely one of the greatest adventures on the African continent.  The Okavango Delta is home to more than 400 species of resident and migratory birds, lions, elephants, hyenas, wild dog & buffalo. Hippo and crocodiles congregate in the waters and a variety of antelope and smaller animals abound.

African Horseback Safaris was started in 1995 and Macatoo Camp, situated on the western side of the Okavango Delta, is the main base for the horseback safaris.  It features seven large, comfortable twin tents, each with an en-suite bathroom, and sleeps a maximum of 14 guests. Centrally there is a large well-appointed mess tent and, tucked away, a private pool. The horses are much loved and beautifully cared for thoroughbreds, Namibian Hanoverian and Kalahari-Arab crossbreeds. Expertly schooled and in excellent condition they range in size from 14 to 17 hands (140-170cm) meaning there is a horse to suit everyone, and a choice of English or trail saddles.

Qualified guides will share their intimate knowledge of the Delta – the largest inland delta in the world – using the horses to best effect to bring you closer to birds, game and nature. If you are not a rider, or if you would like a break from the saddle, you can follow the fun on game drives, take guided bush walks, go fishing or take to the water to explore by boat or canoe. Time spent relaxing in camp at the pool watching the wildlife browse the plains is also a must.
