Hidden behind the medina walls, right by the sea, this one-time almond storage depot is minutes from everything that lovely old Essaouira has to offer: idyllic white and pink-washed houses, rolling dunes, a harbour, fish stalls and souks. Yet despite its central location it is blissfully tranquil.
An elegantly furnished 18th-century colonnaded patio welcomes you to Villa de L’O. Inside the 12 unique guestrooms are exquisitely designed to reflect Morocco’s heritage in style. Some of them overlook the Bay of Essaouira, with a great view of the island of Mogador, while others offer you a more intimate setting opening on to the inner courtyard.
Breakfast is served on the roof terrace, known as ‘L’Oxygene’, with views over the ramparts, souks and harbor. This is also the perfect place to relax on a sun lounger and enjoy a snack and drink from the bar after a day exploring on foot. ‘L’Oasis’ is the central courtyard where you can relax in a deep couch by a fireplace for reading, or indulge in a traditional hammam in one of the treatment rooms.
Be sure to wander down to the bustling fishing harbour to feast on freshly-grilled fish at one of its many covered stalls: a highlight of any visit to Essaouira.
