Lewa House

Lewa Conservancy, Kenya

Conservation in action

Lewa House is a magical place where elephants play in the river, the dawn burns orange against Mount Kenya and cool air whispers through the valleys, charging them with life. Sophie and Calum, the owners & managers who live on site with their family, have created a warm and inviting atmosphere where guests can feel truly at home in the wilderness.

Accommodation consists of a collection of rustic two-bedroom cottages which sleep four and are part of the original house with stone walls & thatched roofs, plus the more modern Earthpods which sleep two. Throughout the décor is comfortable but simple, allowing the surrounding views to sing. There is a massive organic garden which supplies the chef with a huge variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs, and the pool overlooks a nearby waterhole generating some of the best game viewing on the entire conservancy. At the heart of Lewa sits an elegant thatched building with a big open fireplace – the perfect spot to gather and share stories of each incredible day.

Situated within sight of snow‐capped Mt Kenya, Lewa House sits in a private conservancy where elephants, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino (both black and white) all thrive along with rare species such as Beissa oryx, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra, all of which are unique to this part of Kenya. Activities focus around seeing this remarkable wildlife with game drives, bush walks, horseback safaris and scenic flights all on offer. Those interested in the pioneering conservation work that takes place here can take an active part in it. One option is to help to train tracking dogs by pretending to be a poacher, running and hiding until they find the ‘culprit’ – a thrilling game of hide‐and‐seek with a purpose! All the guides are from local tribes so heading out into the bush with them provides the opportunity for authentic interaction and endless learning.

A safari at Lewa House allows you to find yourself in nature whilst sinking into a wonderfully homely environment with multi-generational and multi-cultural heritage. This is Kenya through local’s eyes!
