Overlook the Mathews Ranges from the comfort of camp at Kitich

Kitich Tented Camp

Mathews Ranges, Kenya

Mountain tented camp in a forest glade

Kitich Camp is a nestled in a remote and tranquil location in a little known forest glade on the upper slopes of the Mathews Mountains. Situated under a dense tree canopy, overlooking the stunning Ngeng River, this camp is a traditional forest camp with all the old-fashioned comforts — an understated classic.

With just six tents it is wonderfully relaxed and intimate. Each of the safari tents overlook the gorge of the Ngeng River and meals are taken in the open mess tent which offers views of the lush river glade from its deck.

With 220,000 acres of tropical montane forest to explore guests can discover a myriad of rare and exciting wildlife. Not your traditional game driving country, mass tourism has not visited the Mathew’s Mountain forest so it has remained pristine with a huge diversity of rare monkeys, buffalo, lion, melanistic (black-coated) leopard, bushbuck, forest hog, 150 species of butterfly, over 350 species of birds, wild forest orchids, and the endemic giant cycad.

These are best discovered on foot and the local Samburu guides delight in sharing their encyclopedic knowledge. Unusually for Africa, guests can safely swim and relax in crystal clear waters flowing directly out of mountain springs around Kitich. Cultural visits to the village of Ngalai are also a highlight and truly authentic since the only people to visit are the guests of Kitich.

Kitich is a very special camp and a must for anyone looking to revel in the tranquility and wonder of this untouched forest.
