Quad biking safari on the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans at Planet Baobab in Botswana

Planet Baobab

Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

Funky en-suite huts

Along the dry and dusty road between Maun and Francistown, where elephants tear up any tree that dares to raise its head, a large grey hulk looms into view—a giant anteater! Follow the side road pointed out by that anteater snout and you’ll discover the intriguingly named Planet Baobab, a funky oasis in the middle of nowhere. This is the baobab capital of the world, where trees average 4,000 years in age, and the vast salt pans of the Makgadikgadi—a lunar landscape the size of Switzerland—lie just beyond.

The accommodation is quirky, colourful and full of charm. There are 18 thatched huts—eight Bakalanga, seven Baobab and three Bakalanga Family—each inspired by traditional Botswana village design. Arranged in friendly clusters beneath the ancient baobabs, the huts feature vibrant murals, patchwork quilts and eclectic trinkets. All have ensuite bathrooms; twin huts come with two beds, and family huts offer a large double flanked by twins.

At the heart of the camp is a lively, characterful bar with wine-bottle chandeliers, cowhide chairs, and a tempting a la carte menu. Whether you’re after a good meal or a cold drink post-exploration, it’s the perfect gathering spot. Outside, the largest and coolest swimming pool in the Kalahari sparkles invitingly, surrounded by shaded loungers and sociable braai areas.

Activities immerse you in the wild beauty of the Makgadikgadi. Go on game drives, zoom across the salt pans by quad bike, or sleep under the stars on the open pans. Guided walks with local Bushmen offer cultural insight, and close-up encounters with meerkats are always a highlight. You can also visit the nearby village and school for a more personal connection.
