Observe the Lemur in its natural habitat from Vakona Forest Lodge.

Vakona Forest Lodge

Andasibe NP, Magadascar

Lemur Island

Vakona Forest Lodge is located in the Andasibe area, approximately 4 hours drive from Antananarivo, 7km from the Perinet Park entrance and 20km south of Mantadia National Park.

The lodge offers simple accommodation in 28 rooms which have been built in a Madagascan style. Each of the bungalows has its own terrace and inside the rooms are basic, but comfortable, with beds with mosquito nets and en-suite bathrooms with hot showers. There is a pool and sun deck and a number of paths and sign-posted trails lead you to the middle of the primary forest – which is why you are here!

Spend your days exploring the pristine rainforest of the two surrounding reserves:  the Reserve Special de l’Analamozaotra (often called Perinet, after the now defunct railway station) and Parc National d’Andasibe-Mantadia.  Both feature excellent lemur and bird watching.  The highlight is witnessing the magical ‘Song of the Indri’: a ‘concert’ of jungle calls courtesy of Madagascar’s largest lemur. Analamazotra is an 810ha reserve that is home to 12 species of lemur as well as reptiles, invertebrates and many orchids.  Exploring the park at night reveals some nocturnal species.  Mantadia has some good walking trails with views across the forest and super bird watching opportunities including the scaly ground roller and red breasted coua.  This is a naturalists goldmine with many seldom seen species of mammals, reptiles and birds.  A visit to the lemur island will get you up close and personal with the lemur.

After an energetic day exploring, return to the lodge with its panoramic views of the forest and surrounding lake.
