The Karisia Luxury Walking Safari is a low impact, unique safari experience within the eastern Laikipia area, north of Mount Kenya. Although undertaken on foot, it is supported by camels which transport luggage and equipment between camps. There are also dedicated riding camels which move alongside the walking party and are available for guests to ride when the terrain is suitable.
The wilderness landscapes here are truly breathtaking and the wildlife is incredible. This area boasts the highest diversity of large mammals in Kenya as well as several endangered species such as the Grevy’s Zebra, Painted Dog and Jackson’s Hartebeest. Travelling on the edge of community land, you will experience fantastic cultural encounters, visit bomas and witness the local people going about their everyday lives. Nothing on this journey is ever staged so anything you see is truly authentic.
Safaris are either 3 or 4 nights long but both itineraries begin at Nyasura, a tall rocky outcrop which is sacred ground, used for millennia by hunters and others seeking shelter. Ancient graves, flints and pounding stones called boluses are all in evidence around the rocks and particularly the caves. The remainder of the journey traverses rich Acacia bush country, thriving with plains game and the inevitable predators – lion, leopard, hyena and painted dog. The safaris finish on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, the second largest river in Kenya. This area is hugely popular with elephants who love to wallow in its muddy stretches, so the river offers a great opportunity to approach, study and photograph these riveting animals.
