Relax with a book on the swing at Jack's Camp in Botswana

Jack's Camp

Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

Eccentric elegance

Jack’s Camp is located on a private concession amid the desert and moon-like landscape of the pans of the Makgadikgadi.  A relic of one of the world’s largest super-lakes, formed some five million years ago, the lake dried up over 2,000 years ago to leave what are now considered the largest saltpans in the world.

Sited on the original spot chosen by Jack Bousfield in the 1960’s, Jack’s Camp has ten tents with en-suite bathrooms and indoor and outdoor showers. Inside you will find Persian carpets, cool cotton sheets and four-poster beds – all in marked contrast to the stark environment outside. The heart of the camp is a giant canvas pavilion that houses its own Natural History Museum, library and dining area. There is also a beautiful swimming pool where you can relax in the cool waters and escape the heat.

This is not Big Five safari territory. It is a unique land formation where activities centre on its geology, archaeology and anthropology. You will have the opportunity to interact with charismatic meerkats, learn the skills of the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen on guided walking safaris and enjoy a rare opportunity for relaxed sightings of the endangered brown hyena. Visit a traditional cattle post and walk in the footsteps of the explorers of old around the magnificent Chapman’s Baobab, acknowledged to be the largest tree in Africa.

Jacks camp has two distinctive seasons: the Dry Season (May-Oct) when you can explore the vast lunar expanse of the Makgadikgadi on a thrilling quad bike adventure, whilst during the wet season (Nov-Apr), the pans fill with water and the landscape transforms, attracting clouds of flamingo and herds of zebra and wildebeest, followed closely by predators – making for fantastic game viewing.
