Located in south-eastern Tanzania Nyerere National Park (formerly The Selous) is in remote unspoilt country without a trace of human habitation beyond the few camps north of the great Rufiji River. A World Heritage Site, Nyerere is larger than Switzerland in size and is one of the last strongholds of the black rhino with an estimated 150 in the park. It is also home to two-thirds of Tanzania’s elephants, the largest African population of the endangered painted hunting dog and large numbers of crocodiles, hippos and buffalo. Birdlife is spectacular with almost 400 species recorded. Nyerere is ecologically different to the parks in the north and is hot and humid with generous seasonal rainfall (March-May).
Sand Rivers has just eight stone and thatched cottages, all are open-fronted and raised on decks overlooking the river. There are 5 Riverside rooms with en suite bathrooms, flush toilets and powerful showers, and 3 Hillside Suites. The Suites have all the above, but come with a large living space and a small plunge pool.
The main mess is spacious, open-fronted and cool. There’s a chill-out area near the library and acres of dining spots – around the main pool, privately tucked away in a quiet corner or on the social “managers table”. Sit in the bar at the end of the day, the drinks are cold & there is always a good story to share.
In Nyerere enjoy walking safaris, fishing, boating, game drives, or a combination of all of these, it never disappoints, and there is always something thrilling to see. The Rufiji River provides an utterly unique view of life. Upstream from the lodge, the river narrows into a deep ravine called Steigler´s Gorge. Downstream the river is wide and expansive with vast tracts of sandy banks where elephants, giraffe & plenty of crocs are seen at the water’s edge.
